Krieg caps collegiate career with Orediggers

Former Springdale girls basketball standout Amanda Krieg completed her collegiate career this winter at Montana Tech College.

The senior averaged 1.75 points per game for the Orediggers, who finished the season with a 22-14 record and an appearance in the NAIA national tournament in Oklahoma City in mid-March.

Snyder named new Deer Park High AD

Chris Snyder, who served as an assistant football coach the past two seasons, was named Deer Park High School’s new athletic director.

Snyder will replace Scott Carlson, who resigned effective in June to spend more time with his family.

In the interim, Carlson will help Snyder transition into his new AD role.

DesRoches heading to NCAA wrestling championships

Cal Poly 165-pounder Ryan DesRoches (a three-time state champion while at Riverside) will join three Mustang teammates at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on March 17-19 in Philadelphia.

DesRoches, a 2008 RHS grad, and 197-pounder Ryan Smith have been selected as at-large entries.

NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee made their at-large selections based on head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and number of matches contested at that weight class.

DesRoches and Smith will join Cal Poly’s automatic qualifiers Boris Novachkov (141) and Barrett Abel (157) at the national finals.

DesRoches, making his second trip to the nationals, compiled a 33-6 record this season and finished third in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships two weeks ago at Oregon State. The junior pinned 14 opponents this season, raising his career total to 36, and will carry an 83-29 career record to Philadelphia.

DesRoches will face second-seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin in the opening round.

WIAA looking for hoop tourney comments

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is conducting an online survey until March 14 to determine fan reaction to the new state basketball tournament format.

The WIAA’s executive board will use the survey to help plan future Hardwood Classics.

Coaches and member schools will be asked to complete different surveys to gather their input.

R-side’s Wood earns all-league hoop honor

Riverside's Jordan Wood led the Rams with a 15.7-point-per-game scoring average this season.

The 2010-11 all-league basketball lists have begun trickling into the newsroom with the release of the All-Northeast A League boys teams.

Earning the honor was Riverside junior guard Jordan Wood, who led the Rams with a 15.7-point-per game average. Wood, who connected on a school record seven 3-pointers in a game against Lakeside in January, hit 66 of 144 long-range bombs (44 percent) on the season.

Also named to the first team were Jacob Erickson of Lakeside, Cody Unfred of Freeman and Alex Pond and Matt Hubbard, both of Colville.

Riverside’s Jacob Biggs, who averaged 11.45 ppg game this season, was named to second team. Second-team honors also went to Ben Kuiper and Kellen Miller, both of Freeman, Gene Schatz of Chewelah,  Jeron Konkright of Newport and Connor Moffatt of Lakeside.

Newport’s Jake Wiley and Lakeside’s Ryan Gunderson shared the most valuable player award while David Pratt of Lakeside and John Graham of Freeman were co-coaches of the year.

Schooler now coaching at Edmonds Community College

Former Deer Park girls basketball coach Jennifer Schooler, who has a tumultuous one season (2003-04) with the Lady Stags, is in her third season as the head coach at Edmonds Community College.

Her assistant coach is also a familiar face to Deer Park athletes, Katie Campbell.

After leaving DPHS, where she compiled an 8-12 record, Schooler hooked on as an assistant coach at Evergreen State College in Olympia.

In her first season at ECC (2008-09), the Tritons went 0-23. They improved to 11-15 last season. Currently, ECC is 9-9.

•Campbell, a three-sport athlete at DPHS before transferring to Lakeside High School for her senior year, earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education health and fitness from Northwest University.

DP’s Hilpert, R-side’s DesRoches honored for classroom work

Deer Park head coach Matt Jorgensen (right) was named the state's top Class 2A wrestling coach in a brief ceremony on Friday at Mat Classic XXIII.

Deer Park’s Joe Hilpert and Riverside’s Nick DesRoches were state champions even before Mat Classic XXIII got underway.

The seniors were named coaches academic champions for their work in the classroom.

Hilpert, who has a 4.0 grade point average, shared the 135-pound honor in the Class 2A ranks with Dylan Riordan of Anacortes and Andrew Peterson of Bellingham. The 171-pound DesRoches earned recognition in the Class 1A ranks with a 3.85 gpa.

• With his 285-pound state championship, Shawn Burton joined Dylan Miller as the only Stags to earn in Mat Classic medal in four straight years. Burton finished sixth as a freshman, first as a sophomore and second as a junior. Miller, a 2009 graduate, finished 8-2-1-1 during his four years at DPHS.

Dale Blad was also four-year medalist with only his first two (a fourth and first) coming at DPHS. He won another championship and finished third as a senior (1987) while at Enumclaw High School.

• Burton and Billy Rhoads brought home Deer Park’s 23rd and 24th individual state championships last weekend. They also joined Phil McLean, Alex Schulz, DrewAcorn and Miller with multiple championships.

• Lakeside senior Josh Lauderdale joined his father and brother as four-year medalist.

His father (a 1986 Riverside High School graduate) finished 5-4-2-2 with at RHS. His brother, Jacob, a 2009 Lakeside grad and now wrestling at Oregon State University, placed fourth as a freshman to go along with his three state championships with the Eagles.

• Speaking of three-time state champions, McLean (DPHS Class of 1986) led Mead to a third place finish in the Class 4A ranks last weekend.
