
Deer Park head coach Matt Jorgensen (right) was named the state's top Class 2A wrestling coach in a brief ceremony on Friday at Mat Classic XXIII.
Deer Park’s Joe Hilpert and Riverside’s Nick DesRoches were state champions even before Mat Classic XXIII got underway.
The seniors were named coaches academic champions for their work in the classroom.
Hilpert, who has a 4.0 grade point average, shared the 135-pound honor in the Class 2A ranks with Dylan Riordan of Anacortes and Andrew Peterson of Bellingham. The 171-pound DesRoches earned recognition in the Class 1A ranks with a 3.85 gpa.
• With his 285-pound state championship, Shawn Burton joined Dylan Miller as the only Stags to earn in Mat Classic medal in four straight years. Burton finished sixth as a freshman, first as a sophomore and second as a junior. Miller, a 2009 graduate, finished 8-2-1-1 during his four years at DPHS.
Dale Blad was also four-year medalist with only his first two (a fourth and first) coming at DPHS. He won another championship and finished third as a senior (1987) while at Enumclaw High School.
• Burton and Billy Rhoads brought home Deer Park’s 23rd and 24th individual state championships last weekend. They also joined Phil McLean, Alex Schulz, DrewAcorn and Miller with multiple championships.
• Lakeside senior Josh Lauderdale joined his father and brother as four-year medalist.
His father (a 1986 Riverside High School graduate) finished 5-4-2-2 with at RHS. His brother, Jacob, a 2009 Lakeside grad and now wrestling at Oregon State University, placed fourth as a freshman to go along with his three state championships with the Eagles.
• Speaking of three-time state champions, McLean (DPHS Class of 1986) led Mead to a third place finish in the Class 4A ranks last weekend.
