Former Riverside boys basketball and tennis coach Brent Monroe has taken over the athletic directors duties at the high school and middle school.

Monroe takes over for Nick Hamm, who resigned at the end of the last school year after only one year on the job.

Monroe, who found out about his new job last week, started his tenure at Riverside in the 1991-92 school year after a six-year tenure at Chelan High School, where he worked as athletic director.

He served as boys basketball coach at Riverside on two separate occasions, leading the Rams to the state Class A tournament in 2006.

In addition to his time at Riverside and Chelan, he also coached eight years at Kendrick (Idaho) High School, where he won the state Class A-4 title in 1985.

Monroe attended Elk River (Idaho) High School and later played two basketball seasons with the University of Idaho.

He and his wife, Nancy, have two grown children.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s executive board, faced with criticism this winter over the newly formatted state basketball tournaments, made additional changes to next year’s tourneys earlier this week.

The regionals will now be a single elimination format. There was criticism last year that a team could lose an opening game during the regionals and still win the state championship the following week.

The board also decided to play all the boys regional games on Feb. 24 and the girls games on Feb. 25 next year. This will offset another criticism that parents who had children on the boys and girls teams had to choose who to see play since their regional games were scheduled at the same time in different locations.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s executive board will again look at adding lacrosse to its prep springs sports menu at its April 17-18 meeting.

The board has rejected similar requests in past years.

The latest request comes from Mercer Island, Issaquah, Seattle Prep, Forest Ridge High schools and Holy Names Academy. There is no groundswell of support on the east side of the state.

Under the proposal, high school boys and girls teams would be limited to 16 games along with a jamboree. A middle school team would be limited to 10 games.

Supporters of the sport note that outfitting a lacrosse player is equal to the cost of outfitting a baseball player, around $200.

Coaches must be certified by U.S. Lacrosse, the sports national governing body, pass a Washington State Patrol background check, and be trained in cardio pulmonary-resuscitation and first aid.

Cal Poly 165-pounder Ryan DesRoches (a three-time state champion while at Riverside) will join three Mustang teammates at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on March 17-19 in Philadelphia.

DesRoches, a 2008 RHS grad, and 197-pounder Ryan Smith have been selected as at-large entries.

NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee made their at-large selections based on head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and number of matches contested at that weight class.

DesRoches and Smith will join Cal Poly’s automatic qualifiers Boris Novachkov (141) and Barrett Abel (157) at the national finals.

DesRoches, making his second trip to the nationals, compiled a 33-6 record this season and finished third in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships two weeks ago at Oregon State. The junior pinned 14 opponents this season, raising his career total to 36, and will carry an 83-29 career record to Philadelphia.

DesRoches will face second-seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin in the opening round.
